Manufacturing Processes

Manufacturing processes refer to the production of goods either for sale or use through the use of labor, tools, or machines. This term has a wide range from simple handicraft to the use of high technology but it is most commonly applied to the process of industrial production. Industrial production is one of those manufacturing processes where raw materials are worked to become finished goods. Industrial production is mostly large scale to offset production costs.

There are several types of manufacturing processes. Among the many types of these processes are the various types of casting. Casting is a process of manufacturing where a certain material is liquefied and is poured into several types of mold. This liquid material is solidifies and the resulting solid is the finished product.

Types of Casting

Centrifugal casting is a process wherein a tube with varying thicknesses of its walls is produced through the combined technology of materials engineering and centrifugal force. Centrifugal casting usually produces materials that are of standard sizes for further processes of machining as opposed to parts that are shaped for a specific use.

One of the many casting manufacturing processes is continuous casting. Continuous casting refers to the process where a certain metal is heated and liquefied and undergoes solidification into a semi finished slab or bloom for further rolling to finish its production.

Die casting is another casting process where liquefied and hot metal is forced into a mold by the use of high pressure. The products of this process are often distinguished by their excellent surface finish and consistency in their dimensions.

Evaporative pattern casting is another one of the many casting manufacturing processes. This process makes use of a pattern that is made from materials designed to evaporate whenever the hot and liquefied metal is poured into the mold. Polystyrene foam is the most common material used for evaporative pattern casting.
